What is Mindful Parenting?

"Mindful Parenting is to align one's thinking and behaviour with an integrity based outcome...

Mindful Parenting is to raise the quality of one's thoughts and actions and BE an exemplar for our children and young adults. Mindful Parenting is parenting with wisdom... and understanding how and when to demonstrate qualities such as compassion, leadership, discipline, altruism, perseverance, courage, kindness, tolerance, trust, responsibility, resilence, confidence, vulnerability, curiosity, spontaneity, assertiveness, patience, forgiveness, the uncertain state of 'not knowing'... and humour... lots of humour!

Mindful Parenting is being brave enough to be honest about who are you, truly, when the lights are off? To be willing to overcome personal limitations and shortcomings, both for oneself and in order to show our children how to do the same. Mindful Parenting is thinking beyond oneself and even beyond our own children, to include the wider world in our thoughts and actions, so that our children grow up to do and be the same. Mindful Parenting is the process of both short and long term solutions and intentions. In the case of both good and less so, our children are our true and sincere mirror... Mindful Parenting is learning how to recognise and identify unhelpful thoughts, patterns, attitudes, responses and beliefs... and to understand how to change them for desirable thoughts, beliefs and actions...

Mindful Parenting is learning how to unlearn... and how to relearn...

Mindful Parenting is knowing what to do, when before you did not... knowing how to create opportunities for changes in thinking, behaviour, moods, intentions and outcomes. Understanding when to hang in there and when to step back... how to support but not rescue... how to deliver tough love but not judge or persecute. Mindful Parenting is stepping out of the box labelled 'generic child raising' and learning an alternative way of being. Mindful Parenting is understanding the implications of Cause and Effect... and to remain at the cause of one's thinking, behaviour, mood, circumstances and life rather than playing the victim of effect...

Mindful Parenting is learning how to communicate effectively... how to listen to both verbal and non verbal language... and how to be understood.  Mindful Parenting is upping our game and levels of competence... walking our talk. Mindful Parenting is understanding the concept of no right no wrong, only difference... and respecting difference. Understanding that failure has no place, as we gain only feedback and opportunities to learn and from which to grow. Mindful Parenting is ongoing, continuously evolving and ever changing... as are we, our children and young adults...

Mindful Parenting is the difference that makes a difference to our past, our present and our future"
